What can I burn in my Sedore Stove?

The Sedore Stove burns almost any combustible solid fuels:
hardwood
softwood
woodchips
sawdust
wood shavings
cob corn
kernel corn
sunflower seeds
sunflower tops
recycled hardware cubes
barley
oats
wood pellets
recycled cardboard tubes
Tree Saver firewood

Is it a stove or a furnace?

The Sedore is a multi-fuel furnace, with all the charm of a woodstove. The Sedore burns the fuel that you load into it, as well as the gas that the fuel puts off; which makes it a furnace!

Which dealer should I be talking to about ordering a Sedore?

Sedore Stove WEST is the West Coast dealer, but we are happy to service all 50 states. If you are located in the vicinity of another dealer, we'll let you know so that you can take a look at the stove before proceeding with your purchase.

Are there any Sedore dealerships available?

At this time the US manufacturer has limited the dealerships. For Canadians, our licensing agreement with the Canadian manufacturer prohibits us from shipping Sedores or offering dealerships in Canada.

How much does it cost to ship a Sedore Stove?

We have included shipping in the cost, to the 48 contiguous states, AND now parts of Alaska, too! If you would like to make your own shipping arrangements, or if you want to pick up your stove from the manufacturer (Deer River, Minnesota), we would be happy to offer a shipping credit to you.

Where are the stoves made?

Sedore Stoves are made in the USA! The manufacturer is located in Minnesota.

What kind of payment do you accept?

Sedore Stove West accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. We also take checks for orders placed by mail.

When will I receive my Sedore?

Please allow for up to four to six weeks for delivery.

Why is a Sedore Stove better than a corn or pellet stove?

The biggest reason why Sedore Stoves are more efficient than corn or pellet stoves is because they don't require electricity to start or maintain. They are also superior because they are not limited to just one form of fuel!

I live in a small cabin. Can I get a smaller stove?

The Model 3000 is the most efficient stove for all home sizes. Smaller models are only smaller than the 3000 in depth which allows less fuel to be loaded for shorter burn times. You may special order a smaller stove, but the cost is greater and it may take longer to deliver.

How big is the stove?

It's about the size of a washing machine. The actual dimensions are:
Height: 41 inches
Width: 26 inches
Depth: 29 1/2 inches
Fire door opening: 12 x 19 1/2 inches
Height of fire box: 28 inches
Flue diameter: 6 inches

How much does the Sedore weigh?

It's a whopping 450 pounds!

How do I get the stove into my house?

You have lots of options. You can ask the poker buddies to help push, pull and lift it into place, you can ask the delivery man really nicely if he'll help you, or you can use the dignified method, which uses poles or dowels on a sheet of wood. Slide it onto the wood, and roll it!

Does the unit need a blower?

No, the Sedore Stove does not need a blower. The Sedore requires a tall chimney (15 feet) to get the needed draft.

Does the unit need a fan?

No, the Sedore Stove heats your home using basic convection principles.

How is fuel put into the stove?

All fuel is loaded into the stove from the top. First, using kindling and dry wood, you get the fire started. Then, you can place just about anything (from pellets to phonebooks) into the stove. Since it burns at the bottom, the fuel is gravity-fed as it burns. This makes it easy to load; and it means you only need to load the stove once or twice a day.

How long have Sedore Stoves been made?

The Sedore Stove was invented in Canada about 30 years ago by Ernest Sedore. The design has been improved on by USA manufacturer, Bruce Wolfe.

Can you burn animal manure in the stove?

If the manure is dry enough and plant-based, YES, you can burn it in the stove with positive results. We recommend that you burn a UL-approved fuel (dry wood, pellets, etc.) often to clean out the chimney and keep the stove in working order.

How does changing the stack temperature affect the stove's efficiency?

It has minimal affect on efficiency because of the design of the stove. The Sedore burns its fuel at the bottom of the front chamber. Most of the solid fuel is pre-heated into a gas as it is being gravity-fed to the fire. The gas is then almost completely combusted as it has to pass through the fire at the bottom to leave the front chamber. So the stove can operate at lower temperatures and still perform effeciently.

What temperatures and fuels does the Sedore burn most efficiently?

The Sedore Stove will operate effeciently over a wide range of temperatures burning a wide range of fuels. The manufacturer recommends running the furnace at a minimum of 300 degrees in the furnace and 150 degrees in the stack. To clear out any creosote that may be in the furnace or stack, bring the temperature up to 800 degrees about once a week.

Where do I attach my thermometers to get the most accurate reading?

On the furnace, attach the thermometer 9 inches from the bottom, on the last baffle. On the stack, attach the thermometer 18 inches up from the furnace.

How does the outside temperature affect the draft on the chimney?

The outside temperature has an effect on the draft of the chimney, but if the pipe is the proper length, it won't be an issue. A minimum of 15 feet of 6 inch diameter chimney pipe, with the addition of 6 feet for every 90 degree elbow or 3 feet for every 45 degree bend.

What ratings or certifications does the Sedore Stove have?

The Sedore Stove is UL approved in the USA. At this time the Sedore has an Exempt rating from the EPA. That simply means the Sedore was too unique for the EPA's testing to get an accurate reading.

How are the two different water heating options implemented?

Both the domestic and radiant heat coils are stainless steel pipes. The difference between the coils is that the radiant coils are twice as long as the domestic, and they are installed in the front chamber where the stove is hotter. The radiant coils are too hot for domestic use!

The domestic coils are in the back chamber because it is cooler, which keeps your hot water heater/tank from overheating.

Does the Sedore include any provision for attaching a duct for outside combustion air?

No, not at this time. We have requested that the manufacturer look into adding this to a future design.

Is assembly required?

Assembly is not required! All you need to worry about is getting the stove into your home, installing it, and collecting fuel!

Does the Sedore come with anything?

Sedores are shipped with two tools: a flat-bladed poker for stoking the fire and a tool for cleaning out the ash. It also comes with two thermometers: one for the stack and one for the furnace.

Can I install a Sedore using a chimney with a 90 degree turn in it?

Yes, if it is legal where you live and the horizontal run is short. The chimney needs to be a minimum of 15 feet tall, and 6 inches in diameter. The manufacturer recommends that for every 90 degree angle in your pipe, you add 6 feet of height to the pipe. So, if your pipe has two 90 degree turns in it, you would add 12 feet to the top, for a total of 27 feet (15 + 6 + 6).

Are there any options for me if my chimney isn't tall enough?

First, do whatever possible (and legal) to add length to your chimney. If you cannot add anymore height, you can have an induction fan installed. Some Sedore users have added an induction fan into the chimney to create the proper draft. Unfortunately, you will need to use electricity to keep your induction fan going.

Do you offer a payment plan?

Yes, we offer a layaway plan. We encourage you to take the monthly amount you're paying for heat, and pay that toward your Sedore over the spring, summer and fall months. Please contact us for more information.

Can I talk to someone about the stoves before making my purchase?

We are happy to answer all of your questions. Please send us your contact information on the contact form. Indicate in the message that you would like to speak with a representative, along with convenient times for a phone conversation. A qualified representative will call you right away. If we're unable to answer your questions, we will set up a time for you to talk on the phone with the manufacturer.

What upgrades are needed to burn pellets?

No upgrades necessary!! The manufacturer used to offer a special grated basket for pellets, but quickly found that it was unnecessary and inefficient. Pellets can be poured directly into the Sedore (it's top-loading). The Sedore will hold about 4 bags of pellets, and burn for about 20 hours, and put out over 100,000 BTUs (enough for 3000+ square feet). I'm curious--what does your current pellet stove put out for BTUs and how many bags of pellets does it hold?

What upgrades are needed to connect to a boiler?

The Sedore needs the Radiant Heat Coils ($420) installed, in order to hook up to a hydronic radiant heat or boiler system. To hook up the Sedore to a boiler system, we recommend that you use a contractor or plumber.

Can I replace my diesel furnace with the Sedore?

Yes, you can use a Sedore instead of your current heat source. It has the power to completely replace your current system. As long as the location in your home where you install the Sedore has enough clearance from the walls, and you can install a chimney that is 15 feet, then YES, a Sedore can work for you. The Sedore would not work in conjunction with the diesel furnace set-up in any way.
